I bumped into an interesting contrast of comments and insights about offshoring and such like today.
Scoble, Nice chat with Russell Beattie comments about the potential problems for Microsoft produced by Evermore Integrated Office and hints briefly at US programmer resentment at offshoring. Very much a US-centric perspective.
On the other hand Slashdot has an interesting article, Indian Techies Answer About 'Onshore Insourcing' , consisting of comments about the benefits perceived in India by onshoring from the USA and about their (Indian techies') fears about some of their software jobs being moved on to the Phillippines and China where salaries are supposedly lower than in India.
It's another aspect of what I see as the "Big Software War" and doesn't provide a simple background against which Microsoft has to make long term plans.
If, as APC mag suggests, What Bill did next... , Longhorn launches in the second half of 2006 it could find a significantly different business environment than the one which applies today.
