There are quite a few developer bloggers out there kicking cats and doing all sorts of other things to vent their frustration about the delays to the likely release date for Visual Studio 2005.
I can understand why lots of developers who use Microsoft tools are keen to see Visual Studio 2005 in their hands. The Whidbey alpha has some very interesting and exciting stuff in it.
But, guys, let's get real. Whidbey is still, as of today, 14th March 2004 in alpha.
If you listen carefully to the presentation on The Whidbey Chronicles: Whitehorse dated 29th January 2004, it seems that significant parts of Whitehorse have yet to be written, at least to a level of reliability that would allow them to be demoed in public.
It doesn't help the developer case when developers make silly claims like, "NO ONE REALLY WANTS YUKON AND VS.NET INTEGRATION!". See To MS: Listen to your Customers .
There are potentially important advantages from using CLR-based languages rather than T-SQL for some classes of problem. So, let's not allow developer frustration to cloud reality.
Microsoft does, in its own imperfect way, listen to customers.
But Visual Studio developers aren't the only class of customers that Microsoft has to listen to.
