Just a brief note about a symptom of the Big Software War.
Sun's Star Office has been signed up in a sizeable contract for use in India, Sun Inks StarOffice Deal with India .
The Indian state of Haryana has, apparently, signed a deal to make Star Office the standard office productivity solution throughout its civil service organisation. Apparently Haryana plans to make use of the savings on software licensing costs to assist the provision of hardware for its citizens. Another angle in the downward pressure on software costs.
In a country which is very definitely first world, it is reported that sales of Star Office have exceeded one million units in Germany, StarOffice Sales Surpass One Million in Germany .
At least part of Star Office's market penetration in Germany is likely to be attributable to the adoption of SUSE Linux by local government organisations and others.
