In a recent post, A Lousy Interface - and on a blog too! I indicated that I found a component of the interface on Marc Canter's blog counter-intuitive and made some suggestions for how that part of the interface could be made less lousy for a visitor to his blog.
In a comment in response to that post it seems that Marc Canter likes his counter-intuitive interface and has challenged me a public debate.
So, it looks like it will be pistols and swords at dawn! Or, failing the availability of those, we might have to settle for keyboards and words. I suggest that we avoid the use of unintelligible graphics since only one party to this debate finds those of value.
I guess the honourable thing to do is to offer Marc the opportunity to withdraw since his comments actually attempt to argue with something I didn't say. For example, Marc seems to think that I was arguing in general against graphical user interfaces. My point was more specific. I was arguing against poorly-designed counter-intuitive graphical user interfaces exemplified in a specific piece of user interface architecture.
Interfaces are part of customer satisfaction so I guess that this debate has some tangential relevance to the focus of this blog.
If Marc wants to proceed with the debate then I suggest we simply post our respective contributions to the debate on our respective blogs. That seems simplest to me.
If Marc doesn't want to retract his comment (and improve his interface) .... then I guess the blogospondence should begin!
P.S. Marc it would be really great if you could modify your blog so horizontal scrolling was not needed. Thanks.
