Spam, spam, spam. Everywhere it seems, this weekend!
In a post earlier today I mentioned the 1700 spam comments on this blog in a little under 24 hours.
In parallel with that I had about 100 spam posts on a mailing list I moderate, since someone had subscribed another mailing list to the list I moderate. Needless to say that resulted in an ongoing echo chamber of posts from one list to the mailing address of the other, none of which were of any interest to the human readers whose mailboxes were being inundated.
I have seen and caught numerous similar attempts to subscribe other lists to that list. I thought I had blocked yesterday's one too but somehow that blocking hadn't "taken".
Another list which I am a member of had in excess of 300 spam posts in the last 24 hours. In the end I unsubscribed with the flow of spam posts still going strong. The list moderator might be away for the weekend or simply not online but for list members it hasn't been fun.
And then, of course, there is the usual gamut of spam which seems to get past AOL's spam filters. I use an AOL address to post to the Microsoft newsgroups.
I have a couple of email addresses which get an average of 1 spam post a week or less. I guess they should be guarded carefully in these spam-laden times.
A year or so ago blogging was essentially spam free. At least if it was happening I wasn't seeing it. It has become a serious problem. And, as I mentioned earlier SixApart is setting up TypeKey Authentication Services for use with the upcoming Movable Type 3.0.
I wonder how useful that will prove to be. Time will tell.
