Given the horrific things that are happening around the world, the focus of this post is pretty trivial, really. But I find it sad, nonetheless.
Finally, after thinking about the possibility for a few months, I have decided to give up ownership of a couple of mailing lists that I created two or three years ago. Why? The sheer ongoing hassle of trying to keep spammers and other such people off the lists.
I could find no sustainable balance between keeping rubbish off the list and yet allowing legitimate applicants to join the list without undue delay. No, the amount of work isn't huge but it's inescapable and I simply don't have time to do it.
So, hopefully, I can find suitable replacement moderators and move on.
Yet, somewhere deep down, I feel that ... for me at least ... an age of innocence on the Internet is passing. What once was a joy is now, to a degree, a burden.
Will Bill Gates be able to deliver on his promise about getting rid of spam in two years? Personally, I doubt it but if Bill G. succeeds in really delivering on that promise he will go up in my estimation enormously.
